Question about Service Pack 1

Maybe my question is stupid, but I still post it here. Hope somebody can give
me an answer. MS released Service Pack 1 for Reporting services. Should I
only install the SP 1 into the server machine, or should I ask each user
install the SP 1 in his/her computer to run reports?

not do anything at the clients. If the users computers are acting
differently the first thing I would do is see what version of IE they are
on.

I have a report generated in Matrix. One of data field is a Hyperlink. I
used rs:LinkTarget=_blank to open a new window for a subreport. It works in
some computers, but not in other some computers. It really looks like work in
Win. 2000, but not Win XP. All of us use the updated IE.
Any suggestion?

Question About Scalability of Reporting Services

We use SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services to represent reports for our company.

Our boss complained to me about the poor performance of Reporting Services when he viewed reports. He suspected that RS Server is a single-thread server and can not be scaled up by adding more CPUs or memories to increase the reports process speed.

Is my boss correct?

And how can we increase the performance of Reporting Servces?

Traditional scale up can resolve the issue?

Your boss is not correct :)

We will scale up with more CPUs. Most of Reporting Services is managed code, so we are subject to whatever memory constraints are in place by the CLR. So on 32-bit machines we will use up to 2GB of memory, and we will use more on 64-bit platforms.

You can check the execution log to see which reports in particular are taking a long time to execute and what phases of those executions are long running:

Question about RS2k user logon window

When I'm trying to logon the reporting service main page, the user logon dialogue box will ask you to input the authorized user id and password(It's the account created in windows system). But when I try to open certain report!on my reporting server, this logon dialogue box will be displayed again and I have to input the account and password again. All the reports can be directly opened after second entry.

So my quesition is how to setup reporting service so that I can open all the reports directly just after the first entry.That will bother users to browse report!freely only after inputing authority information twice.

PS: My platform is Windows 2K Server SP4 + SQL Server 2K SP4.

Thats because you first contact the Reporting Server (localhot/reports) and the afterwards the localhost/reportserver Webservice. Seems that you configured it for integrated authentication and did not setup the Windows client to pass user credentials automatically or did setup the client to use basic authentication instead of integrated Wndows Authentication.

Ok,I've solved problem. That's because I use domain name to logon my reporting server like this format: http://www.xxxx.com/reports, but I've setup the IP address in the reportmanager configuration file RSWebApplication.config to access the reportserver :<ReportServerUrl>http://220.xxx.xxx.xxx/ReportServer</ReportServerUrl>.

So the first time when I logon to the report!manager, it poped up a logon window with domain name and user account like this format: www.xxxx.com/rptuser, then after I clicked certain report, it pointed to the report!server and asked you to logon with this account: 220.xxx.xxx.xxx/rptuser . I've changed my ReportServerUrl setup to domain name then the problem is solved.

Question about restoring a database

All,
I have many DTS packages pulling data from production
servers to reporting servers. This is going to be changed
so that the production servers push the data to the
reporting servers.
The production server DBA wants to periodically make a
full backup of the databases, "zip" them, and FTP them to
the reporting servers. On the reporting servers, the "zip"
files will be un-zipped and the databases will be
restored. The databases are scattered over half the US.
Most of the tables, triggers, stored procedures, views,
users, etc. in the copied databases are not needed for our
reporting. I would like to be able to drop these objects
from the reporting server databases immediately after they
are restored. Doing so will free up significant amounts of
hard drive space.
My biggest concern is that dropping objects from a
database will cause problems when attempting a restore? Is
this concern valid?

You mean that next time you will restore the database? No, that will not
cause problems. One thing, though. Top free up space after dropping the
object you need to shrink the files. Because of this, before the next
restore, you either need to delete the database first, or use the REPLACE
parameter in the RESTORE command.

I used Visual Studio 2003 to create several reports and those reports are
saved to a virtual directory at the IIS server. At present I can only open
those reports using the Report Manager came with the Reporting Services. I
wonder if I can open those reports straight from the web site with a
hyperlink and without opening the Report ManagerUI. If it is the case how
dose it work to connect to the SQL database? My understanding is the
connection/other information associated with the report is saved in a table
"Report Server" at the SQL database. Can I attach this connection string
information in a file at IIS or can it be attached right to the report
itself? Also how will it work in printing those reports in different file
formats as shown in the Reporting Manager if I allow to by-pass using the

I assume when you mean "open" reports, you mean you want to retrieve a rendered
copy of the report (not retrieve the report definition, etc).
You can access the reports by URL quite easily. If say you have a report
"Purchase Order" in the folder "Demos" (/Demos/Purchase Order). Use this
URL:
http://<yourServer>/ReportServer/?/Demos/Purchase+Order
Then you can attach various URL parameters to control what happens. To render
the report in PDF, use this URL:
http://<yourServer>/ReportServer/?/Demos/Purchase+Order&rs:Command=Render&rs:Format=PDF
All of the database connection information is either stored in the RDL file
on the server, or as part of a Shared Data Source. So, there's no need to
send that info through the URL. If you have additional report parameters,
append them like you would any other URL querystring value. For example,
if you have a parameter "SalesYear":
http://<yourServer>/ReportServer/?/Demos/Purchase+Order&rs:Command=Render&rs:Format=PDF&SalesYear=2005

I've always thought that this was the way MSFT intended for users to get
to reports... built seamlessly into web applications, while Report Manager
was for report management/administration.

Question about Reporting Services License

Reporting Services is due to come out in December 2003 or
January 2004 for SQL2000. I understand that it is free or
like an add on for current SQL licenses. My question is:
Do I have to install it on a SQL Server or can I install
in on a seperate server. I'd like to keep the load of
running reports off of our Production Server. If I had
say a reporting server that didn't have SQL2000 installed,
can I install reporting services there for use with the
Production SQL2000 Server?

VanIt is licensed like Analysis Services. You can install it on a separate
server (i.e. one not running SQL Server) however this requires a SQL license
(or licenses for per processor) for the separate server. There is a standard
edition and an enterprise edition available (enterprise allows web farm

Question about reporting services

Is it possible to achieve the following:

First OLAP dataset with two report parameters, first one single- select parameters and second one is multi-select parameters. Second OLAP dataset I want to apply the first single-select parameter and the second multi-select parameters from the first OLAP dataset with an additional parameter from one of the column of the first OLAP dataset. If so, how to do it? e.g. the first OLAP dataset returns the id column with the selected first and second report parameters and I want to apply the same report parameters and the id column to filter out the second OLAP cube.

The first and second dataset are from different OLAP cubes.

You cannot apply parameters from one report to another, by the sounds of it your only solution here is to build your second report as a subreport and pass through the params.

I can see that it's very easy to create dataset and design page styles
within
the reporting service.
Now I have a question, what if a third party company send me a dataset (not
belong to reporting service),
then I want to pass this dataset to reporting service and do further
formatting and style. is that possible?oh... to be more specific, it seems like you always have to get the dataset
from databases for reporting service,
can I get it from different application (application level) then pass it
into reporting service to use it?

I am generating a dataset and saving it in XML format file with unique name.
Then I am passing that unique name to Report via parameter (url) and with
custom data processing extension I am able to read that xml file convert it
to a dataset which Reporting Services uses to render a report.
You will need to adjust example that you can find on the net to meet your
application needs.

Accidentally, I wrote one which allows you to "bind" the report to an
ADO.NET dataset. And yes, it allows you drag-and-drop fields in the Report
Designer just like you would do it with standard RS datasets.

There isn't a builtin extension that will allow you do what you want. There
is a sample File Share data extension which comes with the RS sample and can
be used as a starting point. However, you can save yourself a lot of effort
by using mine.

not practical. Instead, my dataset extension supports:
1. Passing the serialized dataset XML (typically used with SOAP
addressability).
2. Reporting from saved as files datasets. In this case, you can pass the
file path as a parameter and render the report via URL.

Question about programming reporting services

Hi there,
We have ASP.NET application and we want to use SQL Server Reporting Services
to display the report links to the end user. Report Server however won't be
accessible from the internet for security reasons. The server side code in
ASP.NET pages on the IIS server can access this report server on intranet. I
was exploring the choices I have to build this functionality.
I think the obvious choice of using URL addressability of SQL RS won't work
because it would mean report server can be accessed from internet. For the
same reason I think ReportServer ASP.NET control that Microsoft ships as
samples also won't work because it uses IFRAME which in turn depends on URL
addressability. So it seems programming using Report Server web service is
the only choice. This means writing code for pagination, laying out report in
landscape/portrait manner as defined in RDL, ability to export the report
etc. Is there a better alternative that anyone can suggest?

YogeshYou are understanding it correctly. One point though, are you aware that
Report Server and SQL Server can be on different boxes, so your SQL Server
can be behind the firewall and RS can be accessed from the internet, then
URL integration will work. You would need another license though. Otherwise
until V2 comes out with the web controls your only other option is web
services.

question about indexes

Using SS2000. We have a table that we use mostly for reporting. It has about
150 columns in it. Many different queries are run off of it which use a lot
of different columns in the where and order clauses. Is there any limit to
the number of indexes that can be put on a table? Does performance start to
suffer at some point if too many columns are indexed? I think I read
somewhere that if a column is used in a clustered index then it shouldn't be
used in a nonclustered index. Is that true?

Every new index you create will slow down all inserts and deletes, but may
improve some selects, updates and deletes with where clauses

Question about authentication

Hello :).

I have a web application running under .NET 1.1 and Reporting Services 2005. What I need is to display reports in my app.

Here I have two problems:

1. SSRS uses web service as a data source (it is in my application). Access to the service should be permitted only for known (and logged in) users.

2. Access to SSRS should be permitted only for known (and logged in) users.

So, what is the best approach to integrate Reporting Services and my application according to the security limitations?

Any advise on this subject is more than welcome :)

Talking about web service as a data source I mean simple XML data source. I.e. DataProvider is 'XML', and connection string refers to the web service. So, I didn't write any custom data extension, as it was already written in the SSRS 2005 :).

Question about a SQL Reporting Tutorial Example

In the BOL "Walkthrough - Using a Dynamic Query in a Report" it says:
In Data view, select the Employees dataset, and then use the generic

to start with a static query, then add a textbox to the report with the
dynamic query expression you want to use. Run the report to verify that the
expression-based commandtext evaluates to valid SQL, and then in the last
step replace the static query with the dynamic expression-based query. In
addition, the fields list is only auto-detected from non expression-based
queries.

outstanding invoices for a range of customers (where customer number between
'From' and 'To' parameter). I have also created a statement in the reporting
layout, but now I would like to know I can make sure that the statement for
every customer appears on a new page?
Statement looks as follows:

Adress: Test street 23

You would set your Group properties to 'Page break at end.' You would
do this via: right-clicking the table/matrix control >> select
Properties >> select Groups tab >> select the Edit... button >> then
